Hamburg, a city of art and culture and an economic capital
Hamburg is often considered one of the most beautiful cities in Germany, and with 1.8 million inhabitants it is also its second largest after Berlin. The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, as it is officially known, was founded 1200 years ago, growing up around its port from which it drew its wealth and architecture.

With 50 museums, over 30 theatres, and historical monuments such as the famous St Michael’s Church, Hamburg is an important city of art and culture which offers its visitors a wide variety of options. A city criss-crossed by canals and divided by the River Alster, in the summer months the city centre can take on the air of a balmy beachside resort. And as a dynamic economic capital, Hamburg is home to over 120,000 companies, including 190 French companies, and its port is the second largest in Europe after Rotterdam.
